Disability supports — separate action

Request DOE / 504 support.

If your child has an IEP or 504 plan and the afterschool provider change threatens accommodations or routine adult relationships, you can ask the school's 504 team and the DOE 504 Coordinator in writing to document the transition plan. This is a separate process from filing a DYCD disability grievance and from filing a federal OCR complaint.

This is not legal advice.

A written DOE / 504 request creates a paper trail and asks the school team to coordinate the transition. It does not preserve a federal deadline (OCR is 180 days). If federal options matter to you, read the OCR page too.

Subject: 504 / IEP afterschool continuity concern — [school]

To: NYC DOE 504 Coordinator and school 504 team
From:

Hello,

I am writing about my child who attends [school name] and has a 504 plan. Their afterschool program is being changed under the DYCD 2026 COMPASS / SONYC rebid, and I am concerned that accommodations relied on for equal access will not continue.

Specific accommodation / support at risk:
[describe the accommodation, related service, or routine adult relationship]

My concern:
[describe what happens to my child if the supports are not continued]

I am asking the school 504 team and the DOE 504 office to:
1. Confirm in writing whether the incoming afterschool provider will continue the accommodations and supports my child relies on.
2. Identify the named DOE staff member responsible for coordinating the transition with the new provider before the first day of programming.
3. Document the plan in my child's 504 / IEP file so the record reflects what was promised.

This email is a separate request from any DYCD grievance or federal OCR complaint. Please respond in writing.

Thank you,
[Your name]
